Well, I am back at work today after a great week over on Rottnest Island. It was such a relaxing holiday and another few days would have been even better! The kids and Lisa had a good time as well. I hope we can do it again next year.
Training had to be modified due to the location - no pool & no road/tri bike. I was lucky enough to get a ride in on Sat morning before we left on the 2pm ferry, so I missed Sun ride and 2 x swims only. I ran about 66k over the first 5 days there, including one epic 27-28km run around the whole island on Thu. Got my Wed ride in on a MTB (rode with Paul around the island) for nearly an hour and then a brick run. Rotto is really hilly. Not big hills, but not flat virtually anywhere. So good training. The roads were pretty good too. One thing I noticed was that there was no glass or other road type debris anywhere! It was great. I reckon flat tyres would be few and far between on Rotto.
Living 50 metres from the waters edge was great. I really enjoyed being able to recover from all my running by standing/walking in the water after each run for 10min - I am 100% sure that it helped my recovery big time - as my legs felt amazingly good after all the running I did.
There is less than 11 weeks to go already and my program really ups the ante now. 5 runs, 3 swims and 3 rides each week. Weekly hours go up from 15 to 17 hrs over the next 2 months. Getting enough sleep and eating well are paramount to keeping this going til Dec. I had a few 'athlete naps' on Rotto - which was nice. But my diet was not exactly great. Dome double large lattes featured as did a few cold frothy ones of an evening (beer o'clock was no later than 5pm!)
As we got back from Rotto on Fri arvo - I was able to complete both my rides on the weekend. 7 hours on the bike. Oh man, I am so sick of rain and frontal conditons. I can't remember the last time I rode in dry and not very windy conditions. Apparently this weekend is going to be fine. One can only hope!
